An ADHD adult can look at a clock, see that it’s 4pm, and accurately tell you it’s 4pm. That’s not the broken function. The broken function is the internal sense of how much time has passed since 2pm, or how much remains until 6pm.
The clock is fine. The relationship between you and it is what’s not working.
The term “time blindness” was popularized in ADHD circles partly through the work of Dr. Russell Barkley, who described it as one of the most underappreciated symptoms of ADHD in adults. It’s now widely recognized as a downstream effect of executive dysfunction – not a separate diagnosis.
The common ADHD experience: you sit down to do a 20-minute task. You stand up and three hours have passed. Or the inverse – you have 90 minutes before your appointment, and “plenty of time” suddenly becomes “you’re going to be late.”

“Time-blind start.” Sitting down to start something with no awareness of when it actually starts. You meant to begin at 9am, looked up, and it’s 11:30 and you’ve done nothing.
The deadline-only output cycle. Tasks live in “not now” until they collapse into “now” 4 hours before the deadline. Then you finish them in those 4 hours that you couldn’t access for the previous 4 weeks.
Meeting overruns. 15-minute calls become 45-minute calls because subjective time stretches when the conversation is interesting.
Underestimating how long things take. “It’ll just take 10 minutes” – and 90 minutes later you’re still on it. The estimate isn’t bad faith. It’s a perception problem.

A visual timer (a Time Timer, an analog clock with a colored sweep, or a phone app like Timer+) shows you time passing. Watching the colored portion shrink is fundamentally different cognitively from reading “4:35” on a clock face.
2. Set alarms for everything – even things that “shouldn’t need” them. Leaving for an appointment, ending a work block, transitioning to dinner, going to bed.
Alarms aren’t a sign of weakness; they’re a sign of accommodation. The alternative is your brain not noticing the time has come.
3. Block the calendar in real durations. Don’t write “write report” – write “9am-11:30am: write report.” The block forces you to estimate the duration upfront, and the visual block reminds you when it’s time to start. Underestimating duration is one of the most commonly reported ADHD difficulties. A practical habit is to add half again to whatever your first estimate was.
4. The “next anchor” rule. Always know what your next time anchor is – the next thing that you have to be ready for. “I have to leave at 4:15.
